volume

"volume" is a collection with lots of volume and summery light colours. We are dreaming of sunny warm days with wind blowing through our hair. What could be better for warm summer weather than clothes made of linen and cotton? All fabrics of this collection are made from pure natural fibres in light blue, pink, and green. No fibre blends, only one hundred percent fabrics here. These fresh colours are completed with classics like indigo blue, white and black. All fabrics in the “volume” collection are perfect for voluminous silhouettes, all gathers and pleats. From brightly eye-catching to subtly understated, we want to capture the lightness of summer.

The Helmi Tunic Dress by Named Clothing was a perfect match for our striped cotton lawn. A trench dress with an interesting sleeve detail and cape that adds volume to the back. Miri adapted the shape of the cape and added patch pockets to the skirt for a bit more detail. The final dress is such a cool piece of clothing, a fun twist on a classic shirt dress. If blue isn’t your thing, we also have the fabric in a light green and a pink.

Edina fell in love with this green gingham cotton. Gingham seems to be everywhere at the moment and we can see why. What other fabric immediately reminds you of a picnic on a warm summer day? This light fabric with a little bit of stiffness is perfect for creating volume. The sewing pattern is from a Japanese Sewing Pattern book, called "Tops I want to wear" (私が着たいトップス). This blouse is on the cover and looked like a perfect match for this collection. Volume is created by gathering that runs along the bodice and the sleeves. Wide sleeves, a stand collar and a slight high-low hem make this such a fun blouse. In the name of the collection, we decided to go full on volume and added a pair of culottes. These are the Culotte Bloom by Schnittduett. It’s a classic culotte with pockets and an elastic waistband. It was our first time working with a pattern from this fellow German company and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. For the fabric we chose a difficult-to-photograph black linen. It’s a lovely light linen with a dense weave and slight sheen. Great for gathering and breezy clothes.

Oh the ubiquitous M7969 (that’s the McCall’s dress M7969)! It seems like everyone in the sewing community has made a version of this. And while the pattern envelope doesn’t promise much, the dresses that everyone has made are just stunning. This make actually started with the fabric. During her pregnancy, Edina was looking for a bright pink linen and just couldn’t find it everywhere. She had almost given up, when she found the perfect fabric at one of our suppliers, and we decided to get some of it for you too. The fabric is densely woven and actually quite heavy, but still works well for a dress with lots of gathers like this. The fabric holds the gathers well and creates a lot of volume. Sewing this pattern was such a joy. The sleeve is so beautifully drafted! A nicely sitting wrap front and lots of gather make this a playful dress, and in this fabric a show stopper. The gathered panel at the bottom was cut on the cross-grain utilising the selvedge as the hem. That way, Edina could squeeze out the most from the fabric with barely any left-overs.

In her favourite colour blue, Miri decided to create an outfit from our indigo blue and light blue linen. Both fabrics have a similar, loose weave, which give them a slightly rustic look. The top and skirt are self-drafted. The A-line shape of the top harmonises with the skirt that sits close at the waist but then gets volume through pleats at the waist. A fun little detail is the pocket that sits behind one of the pleats. The rest of the skirt is quite simple. Created from just a rectangle it closes with a button band. This skirt was actually made from the sample piece of fabric that we got from our supplier. Running out of fabric, Miri decided to leave the hem raw, the threads forming a little fringe. A true zero waste garment!
